~Luminous~

– by Samantha Wilcoxson

My Review . . .

LUMINOUS: THE STORY OF A RADIUM GIRL (Highly Recommended!) is a Historical Fiction Novel by Samantha Wilcoxson; it opens in Ottawa, Illinois, in 1924 and centers around nineteen-year-old Catherine Wolfe and the young women who worked for and were deceived by their employer, Radium Dial.

Unaware of the danger involved in the use of Radium paint, though their employer knew the risks, employees of Radium Dial were instructed to use a fine camel hair brush, dip it in the paint, and then put it in their mouth to create the point needed to write the luminous numbers on watch dials.

Wolfe, strong in faith and perseverance, though in crippling pain as she and her coworkers suffer the physical ramifications of radium poisoning, refuses to give up their fight in court against the company that destroyed and, for some, ended their lives.

Reading Wilcoxson’s book is my first time hearing about this truly heart-wrenching story told through a fictional lens; the author creates characters you can’t help but care about.

I want to thank Coffee and Thorn Book Tour for providing me with an eBook of LUMINOUS at the request of an honest review.
